Adding Fractions (unlike denominators) with Pattern Blocks

To add fractions with unlike denominators, like 1/2 and 1/3, model a whole as a yellow hexagon, 1/2 as red trapezoid, and 1/3 as a blue rhombus. Next, try to model 1/2 and 1/3 as equivalent fractions using a common denominator. Using green blocks, the fractions 1/2 and 1/3 can be modeled as equivalent fractions 3/6 and 2/6. Combine the green pieces to see that 1/2 + 1/3 equals 5/6.
