Addition with Linking Cubes

To add two numbers, like 3 + 4, combine 3 cubes of one color with 4 cubes of another. There are 7 cubes in total, so 3 + 4 = 7. Notice that order does not matter in addition because 3 +4 = 7 and 4 + 3 = 7. Explore other ways that two numbers can be added to make 7. To find the missing addend in a sum, like 3 + ? = 5, place 5 cubes of one color and below it place 3 cubes of another color. The missing addend is 2 because 2 must be added to 3 to make 5.
