Dividing with Cuisenaire® Rods

Division can be thought of as finding how many times the second number goes into the first number. Dividing 12 ÷ 3, is like counting how times 3 goes into 12. Because 3 goes into 12 exactly 4 times, 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Division can also be thought of as finding how many rows of the second number can be made from the first number. Stack 3-unit long rods until the area covers 12 unit squares in total. 4 rods of 3 create an area of 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
